| Perranporth is a classic Cornish links of the highest quality. Designed by the legendary James Braid, this course is definitely one of Britain's best. As with many vintage courses, especially if James Braid had a hand in them, Perranporth has its share of blind shots. Walk the course before you play it! There are some very tough holes here - my favourite is the par 5 second. Fools and gorillas may be tempted to treat it as a par four - it's certainly reachable. But get it wrong and your round could be over before it has really begun! The ghost of James Braid has a vast choice of golf courses to wander, but I bet he spends a fair portion of his time beside the second green at Perranporth - laughing at the idiots who dared to treat it as a long par four! The entire course is a genuine challenge, and must be treated with respect. Sloping lies, huge mounds, impossible rough, and scary-fast greens all add to the "fun"! You'll need skill, nerve and patience (there's no such thing as a bad bounce in golf) - to post a respectable score at Perranporth. But if you pull it off - you will feel like a king! The Perranporth Golf Club is as welcoming and friendly as you will find anywhere. And if the staff were any more helpful - you would be in Japan! If I had to recommend just one course in Cornwall - it would probably be Perranporth. The welcome here is exceptional, and this is a course that will never, ever bore you. Even if old James Braid totally humiliates you, and sometimes he will, a large brandy and a sympathetic ear in the clubhouse will have you eagerly planning tomorrow's campaign. |
