Kaitaia
When you've had your fill of the wild Aupori Peninsula, you may be ready to visit to a town.
Kaitaia is the largest town in The Far North - and well worth a visit. It has a good shopping centre,
a variety of cafés and restaurants, a museum and a Visitor Information Centre.
Nearby, at Fairburn's Millennium Nocturnal Park, the glow worm grotto is definitely worth a visit.
Kaitaia is also home to the Ancient Kauri Kingdom -
where wood from buried prehistoric forests is handcrafted into furniture, arts and crafts.

Ahipara
Ahipara, at the south end of Ninety Mile Beach is 14 kilometres west of Kaitaia.
This unspoiled bay has one of the best left hand surf breaks in the world.
It is also a great spot for fishing, horse riding, dune riding, body boarding, and hang gliding.

Shipwreck bay
At nearby Shipwreck Bay, many a vessel has met an unfortunate and untimely end.
Some of their skeletal remains can still be seen at low tide.
Shipwreck Bay is a fabulous place to simply walk on the sand or enjoy magnificent sunsets.
But there are plenty of activities here too - and if you feel like lingering awhile -
there are some great places to stay. See our "Recommended" pages for details.
