| Three Americans arrive to prospect for gold in Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains. They are played by Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, and Walter Huston (the director's father). The old-timer, Walter Huston, predicts trouble - gold can turn a man's head. And he is right. Once in the mountains, the old-timer proves the toughest and most knowledgeable; he is the one to discover the gold they are seeking. The three men work hard together, forming a bond and getting rich. They fight off an attack by bandits, and with each passing day they grow richer. But, as the old-timer predicted, trouble is just around the corner. Bogart becomes paranoid, afraid that his friends are plotting to steal his share of the gold. He is slowly losing his mind and starts to think about securing the entire treasure for himself. The bandits reappear, adding to the tension, and when the old-timer is called away to help some local villagers, Bogart and Holt are left alone with the gold. Without the old-timer around to keep the peace, things between Bogart and Holt come to a head. Bogart finally snaps and makes his play for the gold. But to get it, he must kill his buddy, escape the notice of the Federales, and run the gauntlet of the bandits - all on his own. With so many modern westerns around these days, it's easy to forget just how good some of the old ones were. Bogart is incredible in this movie. His performance as his character changes from a good man to an evil one, corrupted by gold, is a tour de force. This is Shakespearean tragedy (almost) transferred to the mountains of Mexico. It is a movie everybody should see. |
