Appledore & Instow Two small towns on the Torridge & Taw estuaries near Bideford. APPLEDORE The delightful village of Appledore offers a selection of shops, pubs, guesthouses and art galleries. Appledore has been a thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century. But there was a settlement here way before that! Viking raiders, lead by Hubba the Dane, were defeated by the Saxons here in the Battle of Bloody Corner circa 878 AD! In Elizabethan times, Appledore was a major port for the new tobacco trade. Appledore also boasts a long ship-building industry - and the shipyard is still active today. The splendid quay is the focal point of the village. Here you can book fishing trips, shop, dine, or take the ferry across the river to Instow. A maze of quaint narrow streets leads away from the quay - great for exploring! INSTOW Instow is a lovely, off-the-beaten-track seaside resort. The beach and the dunes here are truly splendid - and rarely crowded! Instow has a refined, dignified, mannerly atmosphere - this is not a place for rowdy crowds! The pace is sedate in Instow - and the people who come here like it that way! Bring your bicycle (or hire one) and go for a pedal along the lovely Tarka Trail. Bring your easel and your paints - Instow has inspired generations of artists. Watch the boats - or take the ferry to Appledore. Come to Instow to relax and unwind - it's the perfect place for doing very little - and loving it! |
